Our Mission Police Department recently honored two of our Fallen Mission Police Officers – Humberto Avila who passed away in 1974, and Fulgencio Velasco, III who passed away in 1978. Gone, but never forgotten. The City of Mission officially swears in our newly re-elected Council Members – Jessica Ortega-Ochoa for Mission City Council Place 1, and Norie Gonzalez Garza for Mission City Council Place 3. The City of Mission held a Police and Fire Memorial Ceremony to honor our fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting our Community. Thank you to our Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce for hosting a fantastic event at the Mission Event Center! And, thank you to PlainsCapital Bank for donating $75,000 to our Sharyland ISD! Our Mission Crime Stoppers had a great turnout at the latest Community Block Party in the area of San Antonio St. and E. 4th Street! Officers spoke to community members about crime prevention and reporting criminal activity. Mission Crime Stoppers offers these community-oriented policing events to build ties and work closely with residents. Our Mission Firefighters and several other City Departments also joined the Block Party to discuss a variety of services the City of Mission provides. Mission TX – Alex D. Gonzalez Park Rededication Ceremony Our Mission Historical Museum’s Tardeada Zapateada was an entertaining evening of food, music, and Cinco de Mayo fun! Did you know our Mission Food Pantry provides support for more than 100 families a week? The Pantry, located at 115 S. Mayberry Rd, receives fresh produce on Mondays and Fridays, and generous citizens can donate a variety of food. The Pantry also sells clothing and toys at an affordable price. Reverend Rafael Cruz served as the Keynote Speaker. Residential construction in the City of Mission for 2017 was up 17%, over 2016! – That’s according to the RGV Partnership statistics. And, permits to build homes totaling $42.5 million were filed in the City last year! The City of Mission has budgeted $5,000 this fiscal year to partner with Leadership Mission to participate in a Mission Beautification Project. This year’s Leadership Mission Class has selected to beautify the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Mission – adding landscaping, irrigation, and lighting to the entrances. We hope the Laurel Hill Cemetery Beautification Project will make a positive impact on the area and the visitors who visit their loved ones. We expect to begin the project late summer. City Council Meeting 04/23/2018 The City of Mission Mayor and City Council proclaim May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in the City of Mission and urge all Mission drivers to join in the effort to keep our streets safe and always be on the lookout for motorcycles. The City of Mission Mayor and Council urge all citizens to observe May 13th – 19th as “National Police Week,” and proclaim Monday, May 14th, as “Peace Officers Memorial Day” in Mission – to honor those peace officers who, through courageous deeds, lost their lives or became disabled in the performance of duty.
