Southwest Steel Coil processes and distributes flat-rolled steel and aluminum throughout the U.S. and Mexico, and has provided nearly 50 new jobs to our Mission area. The City of Mission held a Street Renaming Ceremony to rename Slabaugh Avenue after a long-time Mission Volunteer Firefighter, Jose R. Perez. Jose R. Perez was an extremely dedicated Mission Volunteer Firefighter for 39 years and a member of the Catholic War Veterans. Perez was still on active duty when he passed away at the age of 73. Mission TX – Crime Stoppers 13th Annual Golf Tournament The City of Mission recently donated vehicles to our Sister Cities in Mexico. The purpose of the Sister City Program is to foster a bond between people from different communities and cultures and to celebrate and appreciate those differences. Mission donated the vehicles because they were no longer of service to our City, but of great necessity to our Sister Cities: The City of Francisco I. Madero, Coahuila, received an International Dump Truck. The City of Guadalupe, Nuevo Leon, received a Ford F-250 Truck. The City of San Fernando, Tamaulipas, received a Chevy Truck. The City of Mission Mayor and City Council passed a comprehensive Smoke-Free Ordinance – voting for a Smoke-Free Mission. Ronald McDonald visited kids at our Speer Memorial Library – teaching our Mission youth about friendship, cooperation, and anti-bullying! A special thanks to 8 year old, Joey Bazan, who saved up all year to donate his money to the Ronald McDonald House! Joey makes Mission Proud! FEMA Disaster Assessment Team Members at the Disaster Recovery Center in Mission are using modern technology to communicate with the hard of hearing or deaf in our area. FEMA representatives use iPads to connect residents with a FEMA employee who communicates with them over video using sign language. City Leaders from Mission are representing our City at the NALEO (National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials) 33rd Annual Conference in Washington D.C. The NALEO Conference, the nation’s largest gathering of Latino elected and appointed officials, provides a platform for Latino policymakers to meet with colleagues from all levels of government to address the challenges and opportunities facing our community and nation.
