“It’s a great day in the City of Mission as we improve the quality of life for our Residents!”- Mission Mayor Dr. Armando O’Caña. The City of Mission announces two major grants that will improve the safety and quality of life for Mission Residents – The Safer Grant will add 9 Firefighters to our Mission Fire Department and the Birdwell Recreational Grant will transform Birdwell Park into a 16 Court Tennis Court with a walking trail, playground, and exercise stations.
Mission Police Officers, Juan Mercado and John Oliva, two of our Officers featured on Live PD on A&E, were invited to read to 5th Graders at PSJA ISD’s Henry Ford Elementary! The students are fans of the Officers and asked questions about the job of a Police Officer and of protecting the Community. We thank the Officers for giving of their time and building camaraderie with our youth!
SANDBAG DISTRIBUTION: The City of Mission is currently monitoring weather conditions. The latest information shows the RGV could receive anywhere from 2 to 7 inches of rain between Saturday and Sunday. To ensure our citizens are prepared, the City of Mission will be distributing sandbags Friday, October 19th, from 4PM to 9PM AND Saturday, October 20th, from 9AM to 2PM at our Jaycee Park (Los Ebanos Road & Barnes St) and Bannworth Park (1822 N. Shary Rd.). Limit is 6 bags per household and 10 bags per commercial bldg. Must have ID showing proof of Mission residency. Shovels are provided, but residents can bring their own to expedite the process.
Our Mission City Manager, Martin Garza, spoke to CBS 4 News Rio Grande Valley about the City of Mission’s Beautification Project that has revamped the Downtown Area – adding benches, pavers, palm trees, new lighting, new building facades, and even a Splash Pad for the kids! Garza said the Beautification of the City has, and will continue, to draw more exciting events and people to our area! The newly renovated Leo Peña Placita Park has already hosted thousands for National Night Out and will host thousands more for our upcoming Halloween Family Festival and Winter Texan Fiesta. Garza explained it’s ultimately the quality of life that makes Mission a desirable location and destination – with our Hike and Bike Trails, our Mission Event Center, our National Butterfly Center, our World Birding Center, and our commUNITY – Mission truly is “the place to be”!
During CBS 4 News Rio Grande Valley’s on the Road Series in Mission, our Mission Historical Museum Director, Cynthia Lopez, spoke about the City’s upcoming Dia de los Muertos event! Enjoy the festivities that celebrate the traditional Meso-American holiday dedicated to remembering and commemorating ancestors; honoring both death and the cycle of life. This vibrant celebration of Dia de Los Muertos will feature live entertainment, a variety of food and craft vendors, a special community curated altar exhibit, original artwork, face painting, children’s activities, and an altar contest! Baseball aficionados, fans, and admirers gathered for the 47th Annual “Leo Najo Day” at our Mission Community Center! Leo “Najo” Alaniz (1899-1978) was one of the first native-born Mexicans to play professional baseball in the United States. “Najo” considered Mission to be his home. The City of Mission has a street and the Mission High School baseball field dedicated in Leo Najo’s honor.
Check out these budding Monarch conservationists! More than 120 Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas took part in the National Butterfly Center’s “M3: Monarchs, Milkweed & Me” event in Mission! The event kicks off the arrival of the Monarch migration season in South Texas and is designed to educate the Community on the needs of Monarchs – the state insect of Texas!
The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is October 27th. Studies show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. DON’T BE A DEALER – Dispose of unwanted, unused or expired prescription medications at our Mission Fire Station #3 Bannworth Park (1804 N. Shary Rd.) on October 27th, from 10AM to 2PM.
