Oton “Tony” Guerrero Memorial Street Dedication
On July 28, 2021 the City Mission hosted a Memorial Street Dedication Ceremony in honor of Oton “Tony” Guerrero. Mr. Guerrero was a pillar in the community, and was known for his long career as a coach and educator. He was the first the First Hispanic Principal of a Mission public school (Citriana Elementary, currently known as Capt. Joaquin Castro Elementary). Tony Guerrero joined the faculty of the University of Texas- Pan American in 1968 as a Physical Education Professor and the UTPA Bronc Golf Coach. In 1992, Tony stepped down as Head Golf Coach and Physical Education Professor to accept a post at UTPA as Assistant Athletic Director, an office he held until his retirement in 1997.
The recipient of numerous accolades, Tony Guerrero was a member of the All-American Intercollegiate Golf Hall of Fame, the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame, The University of Texas – Pan American Sports Hall of Fame and The University of Houston Sports Hall of Fame for his long dedication and service to sports. He demonstrated an exceptional commitment to his community; he gave generously of his time and talents to the City of Mission’s Community Development Block Grant Program, and was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus for 60 years. Now a street will forever be named in his honor.
