We had a great race through Mission at our Big Ben 10 Mile Run! Thank you to everyone who participated! The City of Mission would like to say “THANK YOU” to these generous sponsors who helped make our annual Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon possible! Mission holds the luncheon every October, for City employees, as a way to remind our employees about the importance of prevention, early detection and intervention. Our Mission Crime Stoppers, along with McGruff, taught students at Mission’s Mims Elementary about Halloween safety. The City of Mission has started spraying for mosquitoes. We spray on a complaint basis. If you live in Mission, and notice a problem with mosquitoes, report the location to our City of Mission Health Department at 580-8741. Remember, you can help alleviate the mosquito problem by dumping any stagnant water that has collected on your property. The National Butterfly Center in Mission taught Girl Scouts about Monarchs and the love of nature during the Center’s “Monarch Conservation Badge Program.” October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. In an effort to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer, City of Mission employees have planned several activities throughout the month – including this one – in which employees made PINK PANCAKES at City Hall. Let’s make a difference and spread the word about awareness, prevention, and early detection! Our Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce hosted its “Fire & Ice” themed annual banquet, introducing the new board of directors and recognizing outstanding members of the community with the Citizens Awards. Thank you to everyone who participated. We are getting close to finalizing our Arnulfo “Tatan” Rodriguez, Jr. Park at E. 1st St. and Conway Avenue! The splash pad is complete and City crews are now putting the final touches on the neighborhood park, including planting trees and placing benches. The City of Mission provided new homes to two more Mission families through our Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG). Our Mission Fire Department held a Pinning Ceremony for 2 new officers and 3 new engineers. The captain, deputy chief, and 3 engineers recently passed their exams and will be filling open positions. The 5 received their new helmets with their new ranks, and family members pinned their new badges. Congratulations, Mission Firefighters! Congratulations to the City of Mission’s “Office of the City Secretary” for winning our “Hats Off To Finding A Cure” competition! In an effort to support Breast Cancer Awareness month and promote team building within our City departments, City employees take part in weekly Breast Cancer Awareness events. During the “Hats Off To Finding A Cure,” Departments decorated hats in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Directors voted, and our Department of the City Secretary won! The City of Mission Mayor and City Council stand with Mission Police Sgt. Ted Rodriguez and Mission Police Crime Victim Advocate Diana Macias to declare October as “Domestic Violence Awareness Month.” The City urges all citizens to actively participate in the scheduled activities and programs to work toward eradicating domestic violence, improving victim safety and holding perpetrators of domestic abuse accountable for their actions against individual victims and our society as a whole. The City of Mission collected a number of E-Waste and Household Paint at our Recycling Event. Thank you to everyone who took the time to recycle! Superheroes Joaquin and Edith dropped by our Mission Fire House on a mission to spread awareness for childhood cancer! The two children are battling Leukemia, and are part of the “FFF – Foundation” or “Faith, Family and Friends Foundation.” Our Mission Firefighters gave the two a tour of the station AND a ride inside our Fire Truck! Because of Joaquin and Edith, our Mission Firefighters plan to donate part of the proceeds from their “Breast Cancer Awareness T-Shirts” to the Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children’s Cancer & Hematology Clinic. Crews lowered our Bannworth Park lake levels, while installing a new irrigation system. The City is installing a system that will utilize canal water to irrigate. Crews had to drop the lake levels about 4 feet to place a new pipe. Levels should return to normal on Tuesday. Our Mission Fire Department is selling Breast Cancer Awareness T-Shirts for $15. Proceeds will go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. You can pick up a shirt at Mission City Hall (1201 E. 8th St.) every weekday from 9am-11am, until the end of October. ‹ Previous«5253545556»Next ›
