We had great fun for a great cause! More than 90 teams and over 1,100 participants raised upwards of $101,000 dollars at The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of the Upper Valley in Mission! We celebrated people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight! Our Mission Firefighters have a brand new fleet of bikes for our Bicycle Rescue Team – thanks to grants from Firehouse Subs! Firehouse Subs gave both the Mission Fire Department and the McAllen Fire Department grants – that Mission used to purchase rescue bikes and McAllen used to purchase fire extinguisher training equipment. Thank you to Firehouse Subs for giving back to the community! Our Mission Firefighters are undergoing HazMat Training at our Central Fire Station – learning strategies to safeguard health and safety, and reduce deaths and injuries related to hazardous materials and weapons of mass destruction – all in an effort to better protect our community. Our Mayor and City Council proclaim April as “Fair Housing Month” in Mission – Fair Housing, It’s Your Right, Use It! And, Mission proclaims the week of March 28 through April 2nd as “National Community Development Week” – Celebrating Success In Your Community! The City of Mission’s Mayor and City Council proclaim April 5th as “National Service Recognition Day” in Mission – to recognize the positive impact of national service in our City and thank those who serve by giving back to their communities. We kicked off the Easter Weekend in Mission with an Easter Egg Hunt at our Speer Memorial Library! Happy Easter! Our Boys and Girls Club of Mission held its Opening Ceremony for Baseball. We wish the kids a safe and fun season! Our Mission Historical Museum held its “MY MISSION: Oral History Project” with local history enthusiast Patti Golden. Golden took us through a wonderful narrative “The History of Mission,” providing an oral history on early Mission, early commerce, and the early ways of Mission pioneer families. Our Mission Recreation Center hosts the RGV Ping Pong Championship! The Easter Bunny made an early stop at our Speer Memorial Library to take pictures with kids. DON’T FORGET: You can see him again at our Easter Egg Hunt! Our Mission Crime Stoppers is on a mission to keep our students and community safe during Spring Break. Crime Stoppers spoke to Juniors and Seniors at Mission High School about the dangers of drinking. Melissa Alviar from UNIDAD, Ana Verley of M.A.D.D., and Dileny Olivares who lost her brother to a drunk driver – All spoke to students, as well. Congratulations to our Boys and Girls Club of Mission and its Board! Due to the Club’s positive growth, the Boys and Girls Clubs of America has approved the Castro Extension as an official Charter Unit to serve more of our Mission youth! A Mission Puppy found abandoned inside a clothing donation bin is looking for a new home! The puppy is believed to be a Labrador Retriever/Boxer Mix.
