SPEER MEMORIAL LIBRARY TO HOST DISCUSSION OF BOOK THE LANGUAGOF FLOWERS

By line: William Renner, Reference Librarian

Do different flowers have different meanings for you?  Join us at Speer Memorial Library in Mission, on Tuesday, September 9, 2014, at 6:30 p.m., for a discussion of the book The Language of Flowers, to take place in the library’s Community Room.  Everyone is welcome to attend and discuss the book.

On her eighteenth birthday, Victoria Jones leaves her foster home.  Abandoned by her mother at birth, she has spent her entire life in the foster care system.  As a child, she was suspicious and angry; as an adult, she is self-protective and aloof—unable to feel close to anybody.  Now, freed from the system, she is on the streets of San Francisco with nowhere to go, and lives in a park.

But Victoria has a love of flowers—as a child, she had memorized their meanings and scientific descriptions—so, she plants a small flower garden in the park and in a garden center where she lives.  When a florist discovers her talents, Victoria discovers something about herself—she has a gift of connecting with others through flowers.  Can she reach out and find true love and happiness?

Written by Vanessa Diffenbaugh, and first published in 2011, The Language of Flowers is a beautiful and moving story about overcoming past heartaches and finding the capacity to love.  Set in the context of flowers and their meanings, the story is told by its main character, Victoria, in alternating narrations as a child and as an adult.  The book even includes a brief dictionary of flowers.

We will have some copies of the book available for check out to those who sign up for the book discussion, or you can stop by our library’s Reference Desk, or call at 580-8754, and we will try to obtain a copy for you via Interlibrary Loan.  This title is also available as an eBook at http://mission.lib.overdrive.com.
