Mayor’s Brunch highlights Mission citrus industry – Texas Workforce Commissioner will serve as keynote speaker

The annual Mission Mayor’s International Brunch, a tradition that stretches back to the 1970s, will be another unforgettable one this year. The event will take place Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022 at the Mission Event Center.

“This brunch is an exceptional opportunity for us to celebrate our international friendships and pay tribute to the citrus industry, and our culture,” Mayor Dr. Armando O’Caña said.

More than 400 leaders from throughout the Rio Grande Valley, the State of Texas and Mexico will be in attendance to foster international relations. The breakfast pays homage to Mission’s rich heritage and the unique role the citrus industry plays in the city’s success.  This year’s keynote speaker will be Julian Alvarez III, the Texas Workforce Commissioner Representing Labor.

The 9 a.m. brunch officially kicks off the Citrus Fiesta events Saturday which include the Fun Fair at Leo Peña Placita Park and the famed Parade of Oranges which attracts thousands of people annually. The mayor said it is an honor to have so many international dignitaries and elected leaders taking part in the transnational celebration. More than a dozen delegations from Mission’s 30 sister cities will be in attendance, some from as far away as Veracruz, and Coahuila.

“It is a unique occasion where we strengthen relationships with our friends across the border and at the same we highlight the citrus industry,” Mayor O’Caña said. “The citrus industry is the foundation and heart of our All-America City.”
