Mission to hold test fire for 4th of July

Business leaders are conducting a short fireworks test launch on Saturday evening for a proposed 4th of July celebration in Mission. Residents should not be alarmed if they hear four loud booms at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 29.

The fireworks testing will be held at Shary Golf Course to measure visibility and to shore up safety procedures. There will be security on site for the trial run on the four fireworks mortar tubes. Mission Police and Fire Departments will also have safety measures in place.

The City of Mission held a special meeting Feb. 18 granting a variance request for an ordinance regarding the discharge of firecrackers. The variance, which authorizes the Mission Fire Department to oversee the controlled fireworks testing, passed unanimously.

Citizens are asked to stay away from Shary Golf Course and Lions Park during the test fire. The fireworks test should not last more than five minutes.
