All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response and AmeriCorps held a barbecue in Mission for their volunteers and for families they helped after the devastating floods. The volunteers from around the world have been in our Community assisting homeowners with the difficult process of mucking, gutting, and sanitizing water damaged homes. Thank you to the 237 All hands and Hearts volunteers – who worked more than 7,000 hours, and the 41 AmeriCorps disaster relief teams – who cleared over 183 cubic yards of debris! Our Community is forever grateful! Our Mission Fire Department’s Special Operations Team conducted Rescue Boat Operations training at Anzalduas Park. This training in the Rio Grande River keeps the 16 member team up to date on swift water and flood water specialty skills. On duty fire personnel also participated in the training – exposing them to the operations the team conducts. Our Boys and Girls Club of Mission concluded its Summer Program with a talent show! More than 50 kids displayed their individual talents – such as singing and dancing – for an audience of kids, parents, staff, and community members! Club Staff and Supervisors dedicated their time and effort to encourage and enhance the participants’ creative performances. We congratulate all of the kids on their bravery for performing in front of an audience, and thank the judges (Dee Rendon with the Progress Times, Robert Rodriguez with our Mission Crime Stoppers, and Xavier Sanchez with the B&G Club of Mission) for volunteering their time to better our youth! The City of Mission was honored to take part in the ribbon cutting celebration. We hope the additions and improvements benefit Mission teachers, students, parents, and staff for years to come! Through our Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program, the City of Mission handed over house keys to another Mission Resident! Mission’s CDBG Program provides housing assistance for Mission Residents who qualify – including repairing existing homes or constructing new homes. The City of Mission is teaming up with the Mission Regional Medical Center for the 9th Annual “Mission Pink” Breast Cancer Awareness 5K Run/Walk – the BIGGEST PINK EVENT IN THE RGV! MISSION RESIDENTS: Join us for the first event to be held at our new and improved Leo Peña Placita Park – September 11th – as we celebrate National Night Out! The Unidad Coalition recently worked with our Mission Crime Stoppers and other organizations to host their annual youth retreat. Area youth participated in the retreat and discussed the dangers of social media, drugs and alcohol, and defining healthy relationships. Our Mission Crime Stoppers held a neighborhood Block Party recently in Mission’s Tanglewood Community. Mission Police Officers spoke to community members about crime prevention tips and other helpful resources our City provides. City Council Meeting 08/13/2018 The City of Mission added 11 new police officers to its police force! The group of officers took an oath to serve and protect, while being sworn-in at City Hall today. We congratulate these newest Mission Police Officers, and wish them success and safety throughout their law enforcement careers. The City of Mission Mayor and City Council recognized the Mission Fire Department’s new Deputy Chief – Frank Cavazos! Deputy Chief Cavazos has been with the Department over 17 years and has worked his way up the ranks. Deputy Chief Cavazos has been assigned as Fire Marshal. We congratulate him on his success and promotion! “Youth development is one of our major goals we want to incorporate into the City of Mission.” – Mayor Dr. Armando O’Caña. The City of Mission recognized the 453 students who registered this year with our Mission Parks and Rec’s Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF). 123 of those athletes competed at the Games of Texas at College Station – bringing home several gold, silver and bronze medals in tennis, swimming and track!
