Our Speer Memorial Library held its End of the Summer Reading Program Party! Thank you to the many parents who encouraged participation in our Summer Reading Program and sparked interest in their child’s love of reading and education! And, thank you to the Mission Police Department and its Police Explorer Program for providing a safe and fun environment for our children! Our Mayor Beto Salinas spoke with 6 new City of Mission Parks and Recreation employees. The employees have been tasked with maintaining and improving the condition and infrastructure of our City of Mission Parks. Thank you to the citizens who came to show support to our Mission Police Officers during “Mission Police Appreciation Day” at Renee’s of Sharyland! The City of Mission has another butterfly on display – thanks to the Upper Valley Art League! This one, painted by our Speer Memorial Library Staff, is at the Library entrance. UVAL created the beautiful butterfly structures that are being placed throughout the City. Our Mission Firefighters and Mission Police Officers competed in a friendly game of softball! Our City of Mission Fire Department held its second Mission CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) class, graduating 8 citizens who are now CERT certified and prepared to make themselves and our community more resilient to disasters. Mission Fire Chief Rene Lopez, Jr. plans to hold these classes every 6 months. Kids taking part in our Speer Memorial Library’s Summer Reading Program learned about Motorcycle Safety. The Mission Police Department held a Pinning Ceremony for 12 new police officers! Congratulations to the officers! We wish them safe and successful careers as they work to serve and protect and our citizens! Mission City Councilwoman Jessica Ortega-Ochoa welcomed residents to Thursday’s Movies on the Lawn at our Mission Historical Museum. Miss Mission Teen/Miss South Texas Teen Maya Martinez brought a cake, goody bags and balloons to our Mission Police Department to show her appreciation to our police officers! She was joined by models from the Debi Lou Modeling Academy who helped her hand out candies and treats! Thank you Maya and all of the models for your kindness! Mission Mayor Norberto Salinas, Mission City Manager Martin Garza, Mission Economic Development Corporation CEO Alex Meade, and the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce CEO Josh Stockel visited the Southwest Steel Coil Company in Mission. Southwest Steel Coil processes and distributes flat-rolled steel and aluminum throughout the U.S. and Mexico, and has provided nearly 50 new jobs to our Mission area. George Malki and Kevin Garcia from the RGV FC Toros took part in Storytime at our Speer Memorial Library – Promoting the love of reading in Mission! The City of Mission held a Street Renaming Ceremony to rename Slabaugh Avenue after a long-time Mission Volunteer Firefighter, Jose R. Perez. Jose R. Perez was an extremely dedicated Mission Volunteer Firefighter for 39 years and a member of the Catholic War Veterans. Perez was still on active duty when he passed away at the age of 73.
